Equal Opportunity and Equity

Presentation by Jack Rotman at DMC meeting, November 1, 2007

Equal Opportunity

a)    Committee by that Name  (no longer exists in AMATYC)

b)    Laws stating EO in negatives (“no discrimination based on age, race …”)

Equity

a)    Money (as in “difference between value of house and mortgage balance”)

b)    Concept (goal) of all groups having similar outcomes in a system

Students in developmental mathematics are often blocked from credentials for employment.

Students in developmental mathematics have often been told to settle for lower goals (to be ‘realistic’).

Students from developmental mathematics are sometimes disadvantaged at the next level.

Enablers of Equity:

Your belief that every student can succeed due to hard work and assistance.

Your job is to fill in ‘these blanks’ (on the agenda!).

1)    Write down one or more ideas in the spaces on the agenda.

2)    Share them with others at your table.

3)    When ready, write each item neatly on a sticky note       .

4)    Put the sticky note on the wall under the appropriate subcommittee title.

Note: Your ideas might all be in one subcommittee!  Your goal is to write down one or more ideas that could enable equity.
