The purpose of the Developmental Math committee of AMATYC is to
improve the quality of developmental mathematics programs in two-year colleges by
providing a forum for the exchange of ideas.
The objectives of the committee are:
I. Increase communication and networking in general among all involved in the
developmental mathematics curriculum in higher education, in order to improve
student learning and the curriculum, including the integration of developmental
mathematics with transfer-level mathematics and technical mathematics of all
levels.
II. Develop awareness and understanding of, and support for, developmental
mathematics programs among all colleges and university personnel as well as
others, such as those who make policy and funding decisions. Examples:
counselors and administrators at colleges; mathematics educators involved with
transfer-level mathematics; NSF staff; state and national education officials.
III. Promote the use of the Crossroads in Mathematics: Standards for Introductory
College Mathematics Before Calculus (AMATYC Standards) as the basis for the
teaching and learning of foundation/developmental mathematics.
